It has been a crazy few weeks getting our house packed for the big move. Just to give you an update on our “plans”, we have hired Modern Moving Company to help move us into a storage unit until we find our next home. Then they will move us to the next house!
We moved 5 years ago, but had so much less stuff so this time I had to have a real game plan.
TIPS FOR MOVING
Label your boxes – Not only will you write the contents of the box, but where in your new home the box should go. This makes it not only easier on yourself, but easier on the moving team. They can clearly see that each box will need to go to “kitchen” “storage” or a specific kids bedroom.

Specialty Boxes – I called Modern Moving as we were packing everything up to ask the best way to move art, pictures, mirrors. Kyle, the owner, let me know his team will wrap any large items in moving blankets during the move. Smaller items we can get picture boxes for – mind blown! He was correct these are a game changer, we were able to buy 5 of these boxes to fit all the pictures in our home.

Declutter – If I could go back and change anything from my previous moves (besides hiring professionals) it would be to declutter things no longer needed. There is no reason to pack anything you do not love or do not use. As I went through each drawer and room I had a system: pack, donate, trash.
While there is a lot that we could donate (toys) we also have more valuables than ever now. This was my biggest concern when searching for a team to help us move, we wanted someone to care about our things as much as we do.

When Modern Moving came to give us a bid he told us about their VIP Service, don’t worry its not extra everyone gets it!
V – Value all of our customers requests and possessions.
I – Incentives for employees to guarantee maximum customer satisfaction.
P – Professional movers that look and act the part.
Storage Bags – My mind is blown by how much space these bags really do save! We used them for pillow, blankets, winter coats, towels! An extra tip is to put a storage bag in everyone’s bedroom the night before moving – in the am toss all bedding & curtains in the bag! (Don’t forget a label)
Free Boxes – If you need to trim your moving costs here are some tips! Post on your local FB mom pages asking if anyone has boxes they are getting rid of! Next, go to your grocery store and ask for their Apple boxes. My mom was a lifesaver making a ton of trips to the grocery store for Apple boxes. They come with handles and packaging in them, plus it’s a great medium sized box.
Plan ahead : There is nothing worse than running out of time before your move out date! We had a goal of 5 boxes each a day once our house was sold! We started with BIG areas….kitchen, basement, garage, clothes! (Scroll back up to declutter🤣)

If you don’t have the time or energy to pack your entire home you can leave it to the experts. Kyle and has team have over 5 years of experience in moving + packing + customer service!
Get Creative: You likely have a ton of items that can also be used for moving!
- Hampers can store hangers
- Suitcases we stored clothes
- Blankets or towels can be used to wrap/ pack
- Coolers are great for heavy tools since they have wheels
- IKEA bags for tarps or bounce houses
Outdoor items : Just a quick reminder to grab everything on the exterior of your home too. We had 6 larger plant pots that we emptied into lawn bags, cleaned & they were ready for the move. The boys had bird houses they needed to bring too. We did ditch all of our outdoor rugs – maybe IG was my excuse to buy new.

If you are moving into storage units and do not want to splurge for an a/c unit here are a few things to not pack and keep at a family member’s house.
- Candles
- TV
- Propane Tank
If you need an extra push to head into a move, I promise you’ve got this! Somehow this is our second move that I’ve been pregnant and we survived.
Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions that come up! I’m always here to babbling with you OR for the expert’s advice reach out to the Modern team!
